Topical Thursday: Equality

I was reading a post on tumblr about “20 Young People Who Believe Marriage Should Be Between A Man And A Woman” and I felt saddened by the responses they gave as to why it should be between a man and a woman.

Their main argument was because the “Bible said so”

Without getting into a religious debate, I’m pretty sure that the main message that the Bible is trying to say is that God is all loving. I find it hard to believe that God would come up and say “I love you.. …unless you’re this, this and this…” Having grown up into the Catholic faith, the only message I take on board is to “treat others the way you would like to be treated”.

As I was going through the article, another argument caught my eye.

I might be interpreting this incorrectly, but according to her she would HAVE TO BE with a woman if gay/lesbian couples were allowed to marry. Her argument seems a bit… crazy… She doesn’t have to be with a woman. Nobody is telling her that she has to. To me, marriage is a union between two people who love each other. It wasn’t long ago when interracial marriage was frowned upon.

Probably the most craziest argument was from this person.

Actually, you can feel like a princess. It doesn’t matter if it’s with a king and a queen, if it’s just a king or just a queen, if it’s with two kings or two queens. As long as there is love in that family unit (whether it be a mum and a dad, single parents, gay/lesbian parents, foster parents, step parents, etc.) she would still feel like a princess.

I personally don’t see how gay/lesbian marriage could be damaging. Why does society prevent two people who love each other from getting married? Love should be the underlying factor of this discussion. If two people love each other, then who are we to stop them from expressing their love..
